I was preparing our taxes in a hurry a couple of years ago when the W2 and 1099 Miscellaneous income forms arrived at the last possible minute in my mailbox. I put down all of my medical costs for treating diabetes and other chronic health conditions. I had all of the prescription costs and even the over the counter medication costs for doctor ordered supplements. I had every copay and other charge written down for my wife too as far as her medical costs. I forgot about the thousands we spent on getting her teeth capped and getting that partial denture. Since it was dental work, it never even crossed my mind as being a medical expense. The cost of that would change the amount of taxes that we owe if it is a valid deduction. I just did not know if dental work was a medical expense. I know that might sound silly to those who know more about taxes than I do, but it did happen. I was looking for valid irs medical deductions and may have missed out on a big one.
