W-2 Tax Form
All taxpayers want information about their W-2 tax form. Let’s talk about the W-2 tax form. Basic information is in boxes A, B, C, D, E, and F. The W-2 tax form boxes want information about the employer and the employee. Social Security numbers, addresses, the employer’s identification number, and control number.
The employer will fill out the W-2 tax form for the employee and it is supposed to arrive in the mailbox to the employee before January 31of the year after the income was earned.
W-2 Tax Form Information
Employees will want to file a tax return if federal income tax has been withheld from the employee’s paycheck. The amount of federal income tax that was withheld will be shown in box 2 of the W-2 tax form. Even if you don’t have to file a tax return, you must file a tax return if you want to receive a federal tax refund.
W-2 Tax Form and the Earned Income Tax Credit
If you qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EIC) you will want to file a federal income tax return. You do not have to have a qualifying child to be eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit. The formula for figuring out if you qualify or not for the EIC is based on a few qualifications. You have to list your filing status, your adjusted gross income, and if you have children.
The rates change for this every year, so it would be a good idea to look up information about the earned income credit separately. You and any qualifying children must have valid Social Security numbers to claim the Earned Income Tax Credit if you qualify for it. If you have investment income over a specified amount, then you will not be able to take the EIC. The investment income limit also changes every year.
Incorrect W-2 Tax Forms
What happens if your employer makes a mistake on your W-2 Tax Form? If you notice a mistake has been made on your W-2 Tax Form you will have to notify your employer to make the necessary corrections and send in a W-2c Tax Form. You guessed it; the little c stands for the corrected wage and tax statement.
Social Security Information
I cannot stress how important it is for the information on your Social Security card to be exactly the same as it appears on your W-2 tax form. If your name has changed due to marriage, divorce, or for any other reason you must file for a new Social Security card to update your name change. This needs to be completed with the Social Security Administration through a phone call or by visiting them online.
