January 5, 2012
- The TurboTax Electronic Filing Center begins accepting and holding ("stockpiling") 2011 tax returns.
- The IRS will not start processing stockpiled returns until the evening of January 17.
January 17, 2012
- IRS begins processing previously stockpiled returns at 9 p.m. Pacific time.
- Once the IRS has worked through the backlog, it will start processing incoming returns.
April 17, 2012
- First deadline for filing a 2011 tax return.
- The return must be postmarked or transmitted for e-filing by Tuesday, April 17, 2012.
- To avoid late payment penalties and interest, the payment of any taxes you owe must be postmarked or transmitted for electronic filing by this date even if you filed an extension.
October 15, 2012
- Final deadline to mail your 2011 return if you filed an extension and have chosen not to e-file.
- Final deadline to e-file your 2011 return if you filed an extension.
