Finding affordable health insurance can be a challenge these days because the costs have skyrocketed over the past few years. Many small businesses that used to offer group health insurance to their employees have now been forced to stop, simply because the costs are just too high. This doesn't leave their employees much of an option, other than buying health insurance in the private sector. Here are a few ideas that may help you find affordable health insurance coverage.
#1. Get several free health insurance quotes. It's usually much easier to do this on the internet than trying to run through the Yellow Pages listings. The idea is to get several quotes and compare them. You may want to set up alternate contact information, such as a different email address at Yahoo or Hotmail so your primary email address doesn't get slammed with repeat offers. This will allow you to review what's out there in your own good time and get back with THEM, instead of them hammering you for your business.
#2. Consider cutting back on your coverage. I know that this is a difficult decision and it's definitely risky, but the idea here is to reduce the amount of some of your coverage. You'll need to actually get together with an agent and take a good look at what's absolutely necessary within a policy and make adjustments where it's least likely to bite you later.
#3. Raise your deductible. This is something that I harp on people to do anyway. Why? Because unless you're rich, you're going to have to pay an annual deductible anyway, right? What are the odds of you seeing a doctor more than twice during a year? How many times have you averaged visiting the doctor per year over the last 5-10 years? You'll have to pay at least the deductible amount each year and that's probably about what you'd pay if you saw the doctor without coverage and just paid their regular office call fee. The idea here is to lower your monthly payments, be prepared to pay for routine doctor visits and sick calls out of your own pocket and still provide long term care.
There are always risks involved when you cut corners on your medical care. As stated in the examples above, everything comes with risk, but it's better to have some coverage than none at all. The choice is totally up to you.
